Smiles were plastered to the face of a retired nurse after she won the jackpot in a £25,000 competition.

Heather Rattray, of Winton, near Kirkby Stephen, bought tickets for the Porsche or cash alternative draw after a friend had told her about Lake District Giveaways in November, so she entered a few competitions the following month. 

Lucky winner Heather, 63, was drawn on our Facebook live, which often sees us announcing new competitions and games, and giving out free prizes just from engaging with our social media pages – whether that’s an unusual week supply request or £50 in cash.

“I drive a wheelchair accessible van, but the lease ends in December 2025. Due to having to self fund the vehicle and all the adaptations, it couldn’t have happened at a better time. I can now start to look for my next vehicle,” said Heather, who is married to Fred.

“Surreal”

Heather, who has lived in Eden for 28 years, said she was so excited from hearing her success that she only got two hours sleep that night.

“It felt very surreal when I found out I had won the competition,” said Heather, whose ticket number was 18032. “Our daughter, Becky, who lives away, rang us to say someone had messaged her saying I had won a competition.”

Heather said that since the win, she’s had congratulatory messages from family, friends and strangers, too.
